Hairspray Background & Trivia

As you are all aware, the opening of Hairspray is rapidly approaching! For those of you who aren't familiar with the story of Hairspray, here's a little bit of background information.

Both the broadway musical and the 2007 movie are based on the 1988 movie directed by John Waters. "The songs include 1960s-style dance music and "downtown" rythym and blues. In 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, plump teenager Tracy Turnblad's dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Budde Dean Show. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show. Hairspray is a social commentary on the injustices of parts of American society in the 1960s." (Wikipedia)

The production of Hairspray on Broadway opened August 15, 2002. Out of 13 Tony Award nominations, the musical won eight. After over 2,500 performaces, the show finally closed on January 9th, 2009. After closing, the show went on several international tours.

The movie was released on July 20th, 2007 and brought about a new generation of Hairspray fans. It opened with great success and broke the record for biggest sales at opening weekend for a movie musical. The movie had a star-studded cast of extremely talented actors and actresses, including: Nikki Blonksy (Tracy Turnblad), John Travolta (Edna Turnblad), Michelle Pfeiffer (Velma Von Tussle), Christopher Walken (Wilbur Turnblad), Amanda Bynes (Penny Pingleton), James Marsden (Corny Collins), Queen Latifah (Motormouth Maybelle), Brittany Snow (Amber Von Tussle), and Zac Efron (Link Larkin).

Things you didn't know about making the movie!

-It took John Travolta 4 hours to put on the 30-pound fat suit and 5 gel-filled silicone face prosthetics to become Edna Turnblad.

-Amanda Bynes' pigtails took two hours in hair and make-up every morning.

-Nikki Blonsky told Oprah Winfrey on the first day she entered the studio, John Travolta said to her, "come to mama".

-Penny Pingleton's dress in the "You Can't Stop the Beat" song was made from curtains in her bedroom.

-Meryl Streep and Madonna were both considered for the role of Velma Von Tussle.

-Aretha Franklin auditioned for the role of Motormouth Maybelle, but lost out to Queen Latifah.

-Adam Shankman made Zac Efron make out with the picture frame in the "Without Love" sequence for over an hour.

Keeping Up With Casey

North Carolina Theatre artistic director Casey Hushion has been quite busy since she directed Hello, Dolly! for us in May. She recently attended the TONY Awards as a guest of Casey Nicholaw. Sound familiar? Casey Nicholaw won the TONY for Best Director for the hit musical Book of Mormon – and he even gave our Casey quite the shout out from stage. He thanked her (using her full name) during his acceptance speech! She also got to walk the red carpet, and made it on camera several times when they would pan to the seats. Needless to say, everyone in the North Carolina Theatre was so proud of her in that moment!

“What a thrill to be by Casey’s side to watch a dream come true first-hand…it was an inspiring and unforgettable evening in every way,” says Hushion of her night at the TONYs.

While she didn’t work on Book of Mormon, both Caseys have worked together on numerous productions. They met years ago but really reconnected while they were in town for a North Carolina Theatre production – My Fair Lady – in 2003. Nicholaw choreographed and Hushion assisted on the show. A match was made in heaven because ever since they have worked together on lots of projects ranging from The Drowsy Chaperone (LA, Broadway, West End, National Tour), Elf (Broadway), Minsky’s (LA), To Be Or Not To Be (Manhattan Theatre Club) and Anyone Can Whistle (City Center Encores), to name a few.

Nicholaw received TONY nominations for his work on Spamalot and The Drowsy Chaperone, and he was included in the list of North Carolina Theatre alums who have been connected with the Tonys either via a nomination or a winner. Now we can add his name to the ‘winner’ column – congrats, Casey Nicholaw!

Hushion has also been busy directing a new musical, Fat Camp, this summer. Fat Camp is an original musical being developed by the producers of Jersey Boys and Rock of Ages, and is a part of a new series called the Page to Stage Program at Cleveland’s PlayhouseSquare. We are so excited for all that Casey Hushion has been doing since we saw her last and can't wait for her to come back to North Carolina Theatre in July during Hairspray.

Evita Audition Information

Starring Lauren Kennedy as Eva Peron and Ray Walker as Che Guevara, Evita will run Saturday, October 22nd through Sunday, October 30th in Raleigh Memorial Auditorium at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts. Evita will be directed and choreographed by Tito Hernandez and music directed by Julie Flinchum Bradley. Here's what you need to know about the auditions for all other roles in Evita.

Auditions will be held on Sunday, July 24th at the North Carolina Theatre Conservatory located at 3043 Barrow Drive Raleigh, NC 27616 in North Raleigh near Triangle Towne Center.

Important Details:

2:30 PM: sign-in begins, no appointments taken

3:00 PM: vocal auditions begin

6:00 PM: dance auditions begin

North Carolina Theatre is seeking strong male and female singers, ages 18 and up and strong male and female dancers, ages 16 and up. All auditioning must be prepared to sing 16 bars. All ethnicities are encouraged to audition. This is a professional production offering both Equity and non-Equity contracts. All adult roles are paid.

Singers auditioning will go in based on sign-in order. Dance auditions will begin promptly at 6:00 PM with a routine taught to the entire group at once. Choreography will be jazz with a strong emphasis on Latin style. Male and female dancers should wear character or jazz shoes.

Please bring:

-Headshot and resume stapled together front to back

-Sheet music of a musical theater selection in your key that shows your range and best vocal ability. Be prepared to sing more if asked. Sight reading accompanist provided.

-Dancers should bring dance attire as mentioned above. Singers should bring attire to move in if asked to callbacks.

Final callbacks are the same evening following the vocal auditions. Callbacks may involve movement and reading - sides to be given day of, no monologues needed. Performers will be notified on site if needed for callbacks.

Wachovia/Wells Fargo's GLEE FOR THE FAMILY! is a Hit!

Thanks to the generous sponsorship from Wachovia/Wells Fargo, North Carolina Theatre and Marbles Kids Museum have now performed two workshops as a part of First Friday called GLEE FOR THE FAMILY at Marbles Kids Museum that teaches entire families to be all-star singers and dancers.

The first session of the year was in February and it was a great success. We had over 100 participants packed into a multi-purpose room at Marbles. The participants learned the great R&B ballad "River Deep, Mountain High" and then learned a dance to it! Pianist and vocal coach Julie Bradley, and Director/Choreographer Tito Hernandez, accompanied by two of the North Carolina Theatre Conservatory's biggest student talents, taught two workshops to masses of people...it was a blast to watch and hear! And I think we have some undiscovered talent in Raleigh! (Moms and Dads out there...we saw you!)

The next workshop was held in May and featured a performance from the hottest stars of the North Carolina Theatre Conservatory doing a medley from the musical Hello, Dolly! Everything from "Put On Your Sunday Clothes" to "Elegance" was performed in song and dance. Then the families learned the song "Before the Parade Passes By." We made Sunday hats, paraded through the building, and sang beautifully - another First Friday success with Marbles.

Are you watching the TONYs on Sunday? They air on CBS at 8PM and are sure to be entertaining, especially since Neil Patrick Harris is this year's host. The telecast will feature performances from cast members in hit shows like Memphis, Spiderman Turn off the Dark, Catch Me If You Can, How To Succeed In Business and many more.

What is equally as exciting is the star-studded cast from NY Philharmonic's concert version of COMPANY is coming together one more time to perform a number on the TONYs. If you didn't get a chance to see COMPANY in New York, it is playing in Raleigh (and at movie theatres across the country) on June 15, 16, 19 and 21. Click here for listings and ticket information.

Ariana DeBose, who will star in our upcoming production of Hairspray as "Little Inez", was in the ensemble of COMPANY. We are thrilled that she will be in our show - be sure to check out COMPANY if you can! You may recognize Ariana from So You Think You Can Dance as well. North Carolina Theatre is fortunate to be able to bring stars down to perform on our stage.

Starring Role Donor Party with Cybill Shepherd

At the end of April, John and Debbie Ratliff hosted a lovely party at their home in Raleigh to honor starring role donors (who give $2500+ to our annual fund) featuring special guest, Cybill Shepherd. As you know, Cybill was originally scheduled to star in our recent production of Hello, Dolly! but could not perform in the title role due to an injury. Before she left Raleigh she attended the party to meet and greet with donors and sing a few songs. She was a huge hit and the party was fabulous!

The Show Does Go On Despite a Quiet Blog!

The month of April was especially busy for North Carolina Theatre as we worked through extensive planning and promoting of our groundbreaking 2012 season while putting up our second production of the year, Hello, Dolly! Despite an untimely injury by our leading lady, Ms. Cybill Shepherd, the brilliant North Carolina Theatre team turned on a dime and replaced her with Broadway veteran, Jacquelyn Piro Donovan. Opening weekend audiences showed their adulation for the new 'Dolly Gallagher Levi' and our outstanding cast with resounding ovations after each performance.

Feedback has also been overwhelmingly positive for our 2012 season that is a collaborative effort with Broadway Series South. In case you haven't heard, the line-up includes three tours: A Christmas Story, The Musical, Green Day's American Idiot and Les Miserables; one play produced by North Carolina Theatre: Steel Magnolias, and two musicals produced by North Carolina Theatre: Oliver! and Legally Blonde The Musical! We are excited to leverage our relationships and resources with Broadway Series South and Hot Summer Nights at the Kennedy as we build on our mission-driven tradition of bringing world-class entertainment downtown to the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts!

Patron Spotlight: "Play Dates"

My name is Jane. This past Christmas, my son-in-law, Brad, and his friend, Roger, conspired and gave their wives, Stephanie and Lorrie, "Play Dates".

It was pre-planned for the ladies to open their gifts simultaneously in their respective homes by their daughters calling each other on Christmas morning. They put their moms on the phone for a quick "hi" and the husbands handed each of them a gift. Seeming to be an odd interruption, they cooperated and opened their presents.

Needless to say, this was such a thoughtful "hit" - pardon the "play" on words. Each received a dress circle ticket to NC Theatre's 2011 Blockbuster Broadway Series - what a great "play date" for ladies!

I plan to take my granddaughters, Isabelle and Emma, and Lorrie's daughter to see Hairspray as part of the Target Student Preview Night offer.

Producers Spotlight: From the North Pole Straight to Raleigh

People are always asking about the process of casting and how it all comes together. The goal is always the same - to blend the best of Broadway with our fine local artists to create the best production we are capable of presenting. Our cast of The Producers tells that story well and is an exciting reflection of our direct link to the current Broadway community.

This winter, I had been working as the Associate Director of the new Broadway show, Elf. I was sitting in rehearsal one day at 42^nd Street Studios, laughing at Michael McCormick killing his scene as Mr. Greenway and I thought to myself - I wonder if we could ever get him to come down and do Producers? Michael has been in over ten Broadway productions and is possibly best known for his incredible portray of John Adams in 1776, and most recently for starring in Curtains. You can imagine how excited I was when he said he was interested. Not only that, but he had been here many years ago, playing the Emcee in Cabaret, and had very fond memories of NCT!

Yet another Elf cast member seemed to be a perfect fit for our show - Stacey Todd Holt, veteran of the Broadway company of Producers, as well as Contact, Big and Crazy for You. We had a similar conversation in rehearsal and luckily, he too was intrigued by the idea of doing a show like The Producers again.

Cut to a few weeks later, Producer Carolee Baxter and I are in auditions with our director, Bill Burns. Bill has a rich history with the original Producers so great performers were coming out of the wood work, due to the integrity they knew he would bring to the show. Michael and Stacey graciously came in to audition for us and blew us all away. They had even been rehearsing their audition together in the dressing rooms at the Hirschfeld Theatre during the Elf run! I felt like we had been treated to a ten-minute private performance, more than an audition. We were laughing until our sides hurt and in that moment, I knew this production of Producers was going to be something special.

Add to this, returning NCT favorites like Chris Sloan (another former NCT Cabaret Emcee!) and new faces such as rising star Lara Siebert as Ulla – and trust me, if that ten minutes was any indication, I can personally guarantee that you are not going to want to miss this one.

P. S. Also an alum of the Elf company. Matt Loehr will be joining us as Cornelius Hackl in Hello, Dolly! Matt's resume is as long as my arm (Broadway: Promises, Promises, Marry Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Movin Out , The Producers) and he is one of my absolute favorite performers. Auditions for Hello, Dolly! will be on Sunday, February 13th at 2 PM at the NC Theatre Conservatory located at 3043 Barrow Drive in North Raleigh (near Triangle Towne Center).

Hello, Dolly! will be directed by NC Theatre Artistic Director, Casey Hushion. The theatre is seeking to cast adult male and female singers. This audition is only open to strong singers over the age of 18. All ethnicities are encouraged to audition. This is a professional production offering both Equity and non-Equity contracts. All adult roles are paid.

Audition procedure:

1:30 PM - sign-in begins
2:00 PM - vocal auditions begin
no appointments or early signups are taken
performers will audition in the sign-in order
callbacks will be the same evening following the vocal auditions and will involve movement and possible reading
you will be notified the day of the audition if you will need to stay for callbacks

Conservatory Spotlight: Master STAS Auditions

This summer, the Master STAS production will be All Shook Up. Auditions are this Saturday, January 22nd at 1:30 PM at the NC Theatre Conservatory located at 3043 Barrow Drive in North Raleigh. The production will be directed and choreographed by Tito Hernandez.

The Conservatory is seeking male and female singers and dancers, ages 13 to 21, for the hit musical sensation All Shook Up inspired by and featuring songs of the late Elvis Presley. Several principal, supporting and ensemble roles are available.

If you are interested in auditioning, here's what you need to know:

be prepared to sing 32 bars of music that best shows your ability and range, preferably in the style of the show
a piano accompanist is provided
please have sheet music in your key
you will learn a dance combination following your vocal audition so please bring appropriate attire and be prepared to dance

Rehearsal and show information:

rehearsals will run July 18-August 10
performances are August 11-14
no conflicts allowed
if you would like to audition for NC Theatre's production of Hairspray and are cast in that production as well, the rehearsal and show schedule will work so that you are able to do both productions at the same time

NC Theatre Conservatory Dance Company to Perform at Winterfest!

Bundle up and head to WinterFest this Saturday from 4 PM to 11 PM on City Plaza in downtown Raleigh! It is a two month long extravaganza featuring an outdoor skating rink with natural ice.

The NC Theatre Conservatory Dance Company will perform two holiday-themed numbers - Jingle Bells and Eight Days of Christmas - at 5:30 PM. You do not want to miss their shining talents!

The Raleigh Christmas Parade & A Christmas Story

On Saturday was the Annual Raleigh Christmas Parade and A Christmas Story had a float featured in the parade for the first time this year!

We also had the wonderful opportunity to promote the show on WRAL's morning news at 7:30 am. I brought Langdon Ogburn, who is starring as Ralphie, and Tim Caudle, who is starring as Ralph, in the production to have a quick morning chat with Kelcey Carlson.

Before the interview, we stopped at Starbucks for some hot coffee since it was pretty cold outside! Some people actually stopped Langdon and said "You look like the kid from that movie...A Christmas Story!" And we informed them that yes, he was in fact playing Ralphie in A Christmas Story, running December 7-24 in A.J. Fletcher Theater. It was great that they knew exactly who he was!

After the interview, it was time for the first day of rehearsals. We gathered the cast together for the first time for a little meet & greet, coffee and doughnuts before they dove into the material.

Since this is the first time that we (producer Broadway Series South, co-producer Hot Summer Nights at the Kennedy and NC Theatre, who are general managers on the show) have done the show, the set is brand new! Check out the model of the set pictured below. It is currently being built and painted. I can't wait to see the finished product!

She also takes classes at the NC Theatre Conservatory - where she takes various classes to hone her skills and talents in acting, singing and dance.

Seeking adult male & female singers who move

All ethnicities encouraged to audition; only performers over 18 are being sought.

This is a professional production offering both Equity and non-Equity contracts.

All roles are paid.

Procedure: 1 PM start time for vocals; sign-in begins at 12 PM. No appointments or early sign-ups are taken. Performers auditioning go in based on sign-in order.

Please bring:

1. Headshot & resume stapled together front to back.

2. Sheet music in your key. Sing 16 bars of a musical theater selection that shows your range and best vocal ability. Be prepared to sing more if asked. Sight reading accompanist provided.

3. Attire for dance if asked to callbacks (see below under callbacks).

Callbacks: Final callbacks are the same day following the vocal auditions. Callbacks will involve movement and possibly reading - sides to be given day of. Movement portion of callbacks will be traditional theater dance. Strong rhythm a must. Men should bring dance sneakers or character shoes. Women should bring flats and heels. NO tap shoes are needed.

Performers will be notified on site if needed for callbacks.

Roles: All roles (principal and chorus) are open at this time. Many chorus specialty parts will be cast from the Ensemble. All adult roles are paid.

Rehearsals: Rehearsals are January 29th through February 11th. Performances are February 12th through February 20th. Local, non-Equity performers are not required to rehearse during the weekday daytime hours before 6 PM EXCEPT for February 9th, 10th and 11th when ALL cast are called from noon to midnight. NO CONFLICTS ARE ALLOWED FOR REHEARSALS OR PERFORMANCES.

Performances: Show runs February 12th through 20th, 2011. All performances are in Raleigh Memorial Auditorium. See rehearsal and performance calendar for show dates.

Some of his other roles include Huck Finn in Big River at Theatre Arlington and Senor Pirelli at the university.

MICHAEL JAMES LESLIE* (Voice of Audrey II) is Cornell Law graduate who made his theatrical debut in the 1977 Broadway revival of Hair. He then became the Lion in the original Broadway production of The Wiz repeating that role on tour. Michael originated the role of The Voice of the Plant in Little Shop of Horrors in Los Angeles, London, (Olivier Award for Best Musical,) and the recent Broadway production and National Tour. In December 2005, Michael was nominated Best Supporting Actor by the Denver Post Ovation Awards for the National Broadway Tour of Little Shop of Horrors. We attended the student preview of Annie. It was simply magnificent. I saw Annie three times during the original Broadway run. I was fortunate enough to see Miss McArdle as that sweet little girl with that huge voice who captured New York, so it was a real treat to see her play Miss Hannigan.

The principals, Mr. Newman as Warbucks and Ms. McArdle and Miss English as Annie delivered a brilliant performances. They so completely engaged the audience that one might have overlooked the standout chorus. But one couldn't. Hard Knock Life, an American classic, was made fresh and new and sparkling by your orphan chorus. This production's turn on Hooverville crept beneath the skin with its haunting images of good people broken by bad times. I have never seen it performed so powerfully.

One could really carry on about every chorus number in the show. From Annie's introduction to Warbucks' mansion, to FDR and his cabinet, to the NBC Studio and Your Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile, including the orphan's reprise, the chorus was superb. That so many of the cast members have their roots in NC Theatre and its school speaks volumes for your organization.

NC Theatre's ability to assemble such a wonderful production is unparalleled. We have been in attendance for the past three seasons and continue to be dazzled. I look forward to each production, and I always expect to see a great show. But, each time, the productions surpass even my elevated expectations. I've been spoiled by your success.

The President Salutes Broadway!

President Barack Obama made the following remarks at the July 19 event at the White House saluting Broadway:

"Now there's nothing quite like the power and the passion of Broadway music....It's one of the few genres of music that can inspire the same passion in an eight-year-old that it can an 80-year-old -- and make them both want to get up and dance....In many ways, the story of Broadway is also intertwined with the story of America. Some of the greatest singers and songwriters Broadway has ever known came to this country on a boat with nothing more than an idea in their head and a song in their heart. And they succeeded the same way that so many immigrants have succeeded -- through talent and hard work and sheer determination. Over the years, musicals have also been at the forefront of our social consciousness, challenging stereotypes, shaping our opinions about race and religion, death and disease, power and politics. NCT Conservatory Students in NYC

On June 10^th, members of the NCT Conservatory Company classes made their 3^rd annual trip to NYC for 4 days of workshops, classes, Broadway shows, special celebrity guests and general “pigging out” NYC-style.

We all attended Promises, Promises and Memphis (two nights before it won the Tony) as a group, and then various shows on the final night including American Idiot, Next to Normal and Wicked.

Senior Company members were treated to a Memphis workshop with Raleigh and NCT’s own Charlie Williams. Junior Company members attended a Fosse workshop with Broadway veteran Carol Shuberg. All Company members attended a Hair workshop with original cast member Paris Remillard.

On Saturday morning we attended a musical theatre audition workshop with Phil Reno, Grammy nominated conductor and musical director of Promises, Promises. After the workshop ,the kids were “surprised” by a visit from Emmy and Tony award winner Kristin Chenoweth. Kristin met each student personally (to those who could still speak) and talked about her love of the theatre while passing on some words of motivation.

We had some great meals at Carmines and Broadway Joes and stayed right in Times Square at the Millenium Hotel. Tito Hernandez and I love experiencing our old “stomping grounds” with our students and getting the chance to share our friends and colleagues on Broadway with the kids.

You've already met our adorable orphans and have hopefully heard the exciting news that Andrea McArdle is starring as "Miss Hannigan", now we are thrilled to announce that Robert Newman is joining our cast as "Oliver Warbucks"!

Robert Newman recently completed his 28 year run on the longest running show in broadcasting history, CBS's Guiding Light. He joined the cast as Joshua Lewis in 1981 and continued with the show right up until its final episode in September of 2009. The role garnered him two Daytime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2002 and 2006.

His recent theater credits include a six month run heading up the cast of the Off-Broadway musical Sessions at the Algonquin Theater in NYC, Shenandoah at the Barn Theater in Michigan, Nine at NSMT and A Little Night Music and The Full Monty at PCLO.

Meet Sandy

Mikey aka "Sandy" was discovered by his guardian and trainer William Berloni in the spring 2005 when he was three years old. Mikey was seized from a family who neglected him for the first three years of his live. When Mr. Berloni first adopted him, he had to be treated for
Heartworm disease which could have been fatal. Later in 2005 Mikey hit the road in the 30^th Anniversary tour of ANNIE as the understudy to “Sandy”.

After two years on the road, Mikey took over the role and has been starring in it for another two years. Mr. Berloni began his career having trained the original Sandy in the Broadway production of ANNIE in 1977. The original "Sandy", like all of Mr. Berloni’s performing dogs, was rescued from an animal shelter. In the proud tradition of ANNIE, Mikey carries on his mission to help the plight of unwanted animals by proving they all can be stars. Mikey is handled by his favorite handler, Patrick Peavy.

NCT Volunteer of the Year: Laura Zupan

Congrats to Laura Zupan, NCT's 2009 Volunteer of the Year!

Laura was officially named Hospitality Chair this year, but she has been quietly working behind the scenes and in the office at NC Theatre for two years now. Laura puts together the welcome baskets for the cast and makes sure the crew always has some orange juice and snacks for load-in and the long technical rehearsals prior to each show. But...more than that - she has helped take care of the apartments the out of town actors stayin, and has ensured they know the lay of the land. She has also provided home cooking for crew members during tech week. These are just a few ways she gives her time and energy to NCT!

Bringing Broadway Home

North Carolina Theatre is thrilled to announce Bringing Broadway Home, a spectacular benefit concert on Monday, June 21st at 8 PM in Raleigh Memorial Auditorium at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts.

This one-night-only event will celebrate 27 seasons of Broadway at North Carolina Theatre and stars Clay Aiken, Lauren Kennedy, Sharon Lawrence, Terrence Mann and Quiana Parler.

Clay Aiken is a multi-platinum recording artist and is set to release his sixth album, Tried and True, this summer. Since his meteoric rise to fame on the hit TV show American Idol in 2003, Aiken has launched eight tours, authored a New York Times best-selling book called Learning to Sing: Hearing the Music in Your Life, starred on Broadway in Monty Python's Spamalot, and has guest starring roles in TV's Scrubs, 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live. Before all of these accomplishments and more, Aiken performed on the North Carolina Theatre stage in Shenandoah and 1776 in 1996.

Lauren Kennedy has numerous Broadway credits to her name since she moved to New York from Raleigh, her hometown. She starred as Lady of the Lake in Monty Python's Spamalot, appeared in Sunset Boulevard with Glenn Close, and received acclaim as Fantine in the final year of Les Miserables. Kennedy has dazzled audiences in a number of NC Theatre productions, most recently starring alongside Country music singer Larry Gatlin in Annie Get Your Gun.

Sharon Lawrence is a four-time Emmy nominated actress and is known for many roles on the hit TV shows NYPD Blue, Desperate Housewives, Monk, Law & Order: SVU, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Grey's Anatomy. In addition to film and Broadway work, Lawrence has performed a myriad of roles on the NC Theatre stage and starred alongside Terrence Mann in the theatre's first production, Camelot, in 1984.

Terrence Mann currently stars on Broadway in The Addams Family. He made his Broadway debut in 1982 in the Tony Award-winning musical, Barnum, and has been a fixture on the Great White Way ever since. In 1987, his portrayal of Javert in Les Miserables earned him his first Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role, which he reprised years later. He originated the role of the Beast in Disney's Beauty and the Beast, earning another Tony nomination. Other Broadway credits include Rags, Jerome Robbins' Broadway, Getting Away with Murder, The Rocky Horror Show. Mann served as an actor, artistic director and director for many NC Theatre productions throughout the years.

Quiana Parler has shared the stage with an array of national artists, from Keith Sweat to Clay Aiken; Miranda Lambert to Kelly Clarkson. Her performances have been seen on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Today Show, The View, The Tyra Banks Show, Good Morning America, The Academy of Country Music Awards and Saturday Night Live. Additionally, her vocal talents have been sought out by recording industry leaders such as David Novik, Walter Afanasieff and David Foster. Her debut in 2008, as Effie, in NC Theatre's Dreamgirls became one of the most talked about performances of NC Theatre's 27 year history.

Q&A with Gabriel Barre, director of NCT's Cinderella!

DIRECTOR’S QUESTIONS

1. When did you first see or read or hear about this show? Have you ever worked on a previous production of this show? If so, when and where?

I collaborated with Tom Briggs and Andrew Lippa in adapting this show for the stage in 1999 from the original version written by Rodgers and Hammerstein for television in 1957. I then directed the production of the show in 2000 which toured the country for three years starring Eartha Kitt, Jamie Lynne Siegler, Deborah Gibson and Paolo Montalban. I have since directed this production at other theaters including the Papermill Playhouse in New Jersey, and the Ogunquit Playhouse in Maine starring Leslie Uggams.

2. What do you like BEST about this show? What made you WANT to direct it?

I was very interested in helping create a fresh view of this beloved tale and to rediscover its relevance, particularly for an American audience. The themes about beauty coming from within and the importance of the imagination and dreams to survive any hardship also resonate deeply with me.

3. Briefly summarize the PLOT of this show in your own words. Please explain the SITUATION at the start of the show and how the various CHARACTERS fit in. (In your summary, please indicate the ACTOR’S NAME in parentheses following the character’s name.)

Most people are familiar with the story of Cinderella so I will use this opportunity to point out some of the features of other versions of the tale that we are incorporating into this production. The story itself goes back to the 7th century in China, hence the notion of equating beauty with small feet and the idea of a dainty lost slipper to be used to identify the Princes bride to be. There have been hundreds of incarnations of the story and every country has their own cultural version. The most commonly known here was written in France in the 1600's which led to our Walt Disney cartoon version that came out in the 1950's and was undoubtedly the version that Rodgers and Hammerstein would have been most familiar with. Ideas that we have taken from other versions of the tale include the notion of the Fairy Godmother as the spirit of Cinderella's deceased mother; the idea of a tree in Cinderella's back yard which is planted over her mothers grave; and the addition of an entourage of animals as Cinderella's friends and confidents. It has been very interesting to understand the significance fairy tales have on our own maturation and the way children learn.

4. What MAJOR CHALLENGES does staging this show present to you as a director -- and to your cast and creative team?

Every show has it's challenges and this one includes the magical elements of the story that really have to be delivered to an expectant audience in a spectacular way. It's also important to surprise the audience even though they will all know the story going in. We are blessed to have a great cast, crew and design team to realize this vision and to do so within the budgets of time and money one inevitably faces in any theatrical endeavor.

5. Please describe the SET:

The original designers and I worked hard to remove the show from the Austrian / middle European normal setting for the fairy tale and create a sort of modern parallel fantasy kingdom....using Gaudi and more middle and far eastern influences. The setting is lyrical and simple and introduces some of the elements from other versions of the story.

6. Please describe the LIGHTING:

The lighting will be colorful and poetic while really helping the audience follow the action and isolate the events the way a camera might (especially important considering the show was originally written for television).

7. Please describe the COSTUMES:

Fitting in with the fantasy kingdom mentioned above, the costumes are very colorful and bold. Featuring a lot of asymmetry and, especially in the case of the stepfamily, outlandishness and humor.

8. Is there ANYTHING ELSE about this show -- or your production -- that it is important for the audience to know ahead of time? If so, what?

Just that this is the 10th year that this production has been entertaining audiences and that it has brought a lot of new and young fans to the material of Rodgers and Hammerstein and we are proud that the production contains important, positive and meaningful messages for those audiences, young and old....

World Theatre Day - March 27

International Message by Dame Judi Dench

World Theatre Day is an opportunity to celebrate Theatre in all its myriad forms. Theatre is a source of entertainment and inspiration and has the ability to unify the many diverse cultures and peoples that exist throughout the world. But theatre is more than that and also provides opportunities to educate and inform.

Theatre is performed throughout the world and not always in a traditional theatre setting. Performances can occur in a small village in Africa, next to a mountain in Armenia, on a tiny island in the Pacific. All it needs is a space and an audience. Theatre has the ability to make us smile, to make us cry, but should also make us think and reflect.

Theatre comes about through team work. Actors are the people who are seen, but there is an amazing set of people who are not seen. They are equally as important as the actors and their differing and specialist skills make it possible for a production to take place. They too must share in any triumphs and successes that may hopefully occur.

March 27 is always the official World Theatre Day. In many ways every day should be considered a theatre day, as we have a responsibility to continue the tradition to entertain, to educate and to enlighten our audiences, without whom we couldn’t exist.

Girls Night Out!

It is amazing how magical the words "Girls Night Out!" can be! I sent out an email to some of my friends asking them to come see The Full Monty with me on Wednesday night, and had 44 "yes" responses! It was a perfect evening. Sally Struthers and Joe Coots came to greet us in the Backers' Club before the show and couldn't have been friendlier!

One of my friends asked me how long I had known Sally, because she acted like we were best friends. She is precious! Joe is a wonderful, personable character as well, who seems to love having a good time. All of my "girls" sat near each other at the show, and I have never heard so much deep-belly laughter coming from a group of women in my life. We were giddy, and it was positively therapeutic!

To me, life is all about making memories and we certainly made them that night. Only six of us "younger" women were crazy enough to brave the late-night entertainment, but sleep deprivation is a small price to pay for the fun we had after the show at Cabaret Night at Solas with the cast. The music was beautiful as many of the cast members sang some of their favorite songs. They graciously let us take pictures with them after the entertainment. That's a big thrill for those of us who admire talent from afar, and it made us feel like we were really getting the NYC/Broadway (or at least the Raleigh/Glenwood Ave.) experience.

You are invited to join the cast of THE FULL MONTY at Cabaret Night - an intimate, up-close-and-personal event where some of the cast members will sing some of their favorite musical theatre selections and more.

Cabaret Night will be held at Solas, located in downtown Raleigh on Glenwood Avenue, and will start immediately following the Wednesday evening performance. The event will be on the second floor and there will be no cover.

Solas is located at 419 Glenwood Avenue Raleigh, NC 27603.

We are just beginning our 2010 season with THE FULL MONTY, but we are always looking ahead to the future! We already have 3 of our 4 shows lined up for next year and want to share them with you first. No dates have been finalized yet...but we are too excited to keep this a secret any longer. So far, in 2011, we will produce...
